Toowoomba Grammar School - East Toowoomba, QLD
Toowoomba Grammar School is a private boys school located in East Toowoomba, Queensland. It recently invested in a $14M development to its sporting buildings, taking its single-level Glen McCracken Gymnasium to a two-level facility with two new premium Volleyball and three Basketball courts. The result is now the central sporting hub for the school, with the capacity to seat 1,000 spectators.
The newly built gymnasium is of an international standard with first-class facilities and amenities available to the students of Toowoomba Grammar School. The Indoor Sports Stadium will look to increase student participation, creating a core location for students to compete against other schools through interschool sports competitions with first-class multi-purpose courts and support spaces, whilst facilitating physical activities towards the broader community to keep both primary and secondary students active and healthy.
Working in close collaboration with Umow Lai Consulting Engineers, Wilson Architects, Aspect Architects and Project Managers, Northbuild Constructions, and John Dowton Toowoomba Electrical Repairs Contractors, Versalux proposed a lighting design that demanded a high level of flexibility, and resilient luminaires that would meet the stringent requirements of sporting activities through many different types of training and competitions. The chosen luminaire needed to be impact resistant, whilst providing low-glare illumination to improve visual comfort for all athletes, staff, and spectators.
48 MAXI CAPRI luminaires were decided upon as the exclusive fitting for the solution. The luminaires were recessed to reduce contrast, improve aesthetics, and reduce the fixture profiles. The MAXI CAPRI is a versatile luminaire which is precision designed to increase vertical illumination with low-glare optics, ensuring that the large volume of space under the fixtures is well illuminated, not merely the horizontal plane around the courts at the player level.
The optics of the MAXI CAPRI luminaires carefully shield the LED light source from direct viewing in all multiple directions, reducing intensity at critical angles right through the multi-purpose Volleyball and Basketball courts.
The MAXI CAPRI luminaires are controlled by a DALI light management system. The functionality between adjustable brightness levels between 0-100% to save energy at a certain time and levels of use and ensure longevity for the fixtures. The DALI control system can create a suspenseful and theatrical experience for spectators adding to the excitement of the activities played within the Glen McCracken Gymnasium.
The Toowoomba Grammar School project won the following awards:
1. Project of the Year – Downs & Wester Builders Housing & Constructions Award
