Mullum Mullum Stadium is a newly built, state-of-the-art sports facility. YMCA Manningham’s recently built $20M stadium offers community-wide access for various schools, club sports, and community programs. The new-aged sporting development is designed with five premium multi-purpose courts covering 6,000m²: two show-courts holding up to 500 spectators, three court halls, and common areas linking the general meeting and function areas with a café, all housed under one roof. The new facility is now a primary sporting hub, being one of the largest community centres in the east of Melbourne.
The project saw both Cundall and Versalux working in conjunction with YMCA Manningham to devise and deliver a new lighting system for the multifunction sporting venue that was dynamic, generated excellent vertical illumination, and delivered high visual comfort for all visitors and staff. The lighting solution was designed to satisfy the stringent demands of multi-discipline sporting operations required by the numerous distinctive training and competition activities performed by athletes and spectators alike.
For all five premium sports courts, Versalux’ MAXI CAPRI LED high bay luminaires have provided the perfect solution, quickly becoming a benchmark in the sporting fraternity for illuminating venues of this type. MAXI CAPRI luminaires were selected as the exclusive fixture, suspended under the exposed beams. The MAXI CAPRI’s, an extremely versatile industrial grade luminaire, is both powerful and reliable as a multi-purpose light that meets the physical and visual demands of various sports. The MAXI CAPRI’s unique optic features the combination of a proprietary acrylic prismatic refractor, a specialised multi-stage reflector, and a high-performance LED light source, all specifically designed to simultaneously deliver improved vertical illumination and maximum visual comfort. MAXI CAPRI’s optic delivers a 3% upward lighting component, resulting in a directly illuminated ceiling to reduce contrast, the benefit being high illumination without the light source becoming a distracting or disabling factor. This improved vertical illumination also increases uniformity in the space above the playing area, especially beneficial for fast moving sports as it ensures that ball/shuttlecock flight appears realistic. The benefits are both in better games, greater skill development, and improved player safety.
A DALI control system controls the MAXI CAPRI fixtures. The system is set up with a pre-programmed push scheme to attain 500 lux for matches, 300 lux for recreational activities and off configuration when the courts are not in use. The DALI control system is a powerful and professional tool for switching and dimming illumination levels, making this lighting solution highly flexible and energy-efficient, and creating a theatrical and suspenseful experience for viewers, and participants competing in competitive amateur and school games.
The spectator seating holds up to 500 individuals from the two premium main arenas show courts, enabling visitors to experience local competitive and amateur sporting activities in a state-of-the-art facility. The MAXI CAPRI luminaires allow viewers to experience all the on-court action and cheer their team as they experience outstanding uniformity and colour rendering.
In the open-plan environment across the transit zones and lobbies the INFINITI series was employed to produce superb illumination, uniformity, and visual comfort. The INFINITI is one of Versalux’ most popular commercial product series due to its performance, sleek design and visually pleasing appearance. Designed on this project with a recessed, continuous-appearance layout, it delivers a smooth transition into the various building zones, and its superb optical performance ensures that in these social areas that individuals are easily recognisable, and that movement from the common areas to show courts, general meeting, function and café spaces within the facility is safe and efficient.
The COMO BLACK series is utilised throughout the corridors of the general spaces of the Indoor Sports Stadium; this high-performance LED downlight features a multi-faceted reflector design to obtain high illumination levels, a visually pleasing aesthetic, and translates into a well-integrated atmosphere for players and visitors in the transit zones between spaces.
