Lighting technologies designed to enhance both patient care and staff efficiency.

Located in Coopers Plains, the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital (QEII) continues to serve the growing healthcare needs of the Brisbane community. As a medium-sized facility, QEII offers an expanding range of inpatient and outpatient services, supported by a modern Emergency Department and a cutting-edge Endoscopy Suite.

To meet future demands, QEII is undergoing a significant expansion that includes a 112-bed surgical facility planned for completion in 2027. As part of this broader development, the refurbishment of Ward 5A marks a key milestone, increasing capacity by 26 beds. This upgrade aims to alleviate pressure on the Emergency Department and improve patient flow across the hospital.

Versalux Lighting Systems worked in collaboration with GHD Group Engineering Consulting and N&P Contracting to deliver a comprehensive lighting solution tailored to the clinical and environmental needs of Ward 5A. This included a complete overhaul of the ward’s electrical infrastructure to support advanced lighting technologies designed to enhance both patient care and staff efficiency.

Lighting designs were developed specifically for each room type, balancing function, safety, and comfort.

Patient rooms feature Nico wall lamps, positioned behind beds to provide focused, low-glare lighting. This ensures both patient comfort and optimal visibility for electronic medical equipment. The independent control of direct and indirect outputs allows for adaptable illumination throughout the day and night.

Directly above the patient bed, Orta panels ensure even, glare-free lighting that supports patient wellbeing and assists healthcare professionals during examinations and care as Orta has exceptional colour rendering.

Como L recessed downlights were integrated for general room lighting, offering high-performance illumination with a warm, calming ambience.

In bathroom areas, Como M and Susa luminaires were selected for their durability and compliance with hygiene standards, ensuring safe operation in wet environments.

Emergency and surgical area were equipped with Clinic and Nico luminaires, delivering high-intensity, precision lighting. Clinic fittings feature antimicrobial coatings and IP65 ingress protection, ensuring hygiene and long-term performance.

Reception and communal areas benefit from a blend of Orta Microprismatic 1200×300 and Orta Opal 600×600 panels, creating a bright, welcoming atmosphere. Shared spaces such as waiting rooms and corridors are illuminated by Como L downlights, this ensures both horizontal uniformity for task performance and vertical illumination to support social interaction and wayfinding.

Through its collaborative approach and expertise in healthcare lighting, Versalux helped deliver a solution that enhances the healing environment for patients and supports the vital work of more than 1,700 hospital staff.
